Word of the Week: Inveigle

I have, at times, been accused of inveigling...but I promise it was usually for good things!

This week's word is the verb inveigle, which means: 'to win over by wiles or to acquire by ingenuity or flattery'. Naturally, I was going the ingenious route and don't believe anyone who says differently.

Some synonyms for inveigle include other words I love, such as coax, entice, and wheedle. Unfortunately, inveigle's popularity was not particularly long lasting, and not particularly impressive, as you can see from the Google Ngram screenshot below (which shows a terms usage in books within a set time frame). For contrast take a look at the second image which is the Ngram for 'God'. Be sure to look at the y-axis percentage numbers!

Maybe you can help bring inveigle back! If you manage to use it out in the wild this week be sure to let me know.

Good luck,

-C
